Best AR glasses for ROG Ally, Ally X and the new Xbox Ally
Every ROG Ally can run AR glasses over USB-C, no dock needed. Here's what's confirmed, whether 240Hz is worth it and what comes in the X20 bundle.
The ROG Ally is made for this. Every model has a USB-C port that sends video. Plug in a pair of AR glasses and your game fills a giant screen. No dock and no adapter.

The made-for-Ally pick: ROG XREAL R1
XREAL built the R1 with ASUS's ROG team, and ASUS says it's designed to pair with its ROG Xbox Ally handhelds.
The headline is speed. The R1 runs at up to 240Hz, double the 120Hz most AR glasses top out at. XREAL says the ROG Ally supports those high refresh rates, while phones and the Switch may be capped at 60Hz.
The rest of the package is strong too:
- 3DoF on the glasses. Its X1 chip runs Anchor mode, which keeps the screen fixed in space, and Follow mode, which keeps it centered. No app needed.
- A 57° view at 1920×1080. ASUS compares it to a 171-inch screen.
- Sound by Bose, plus four mics with noise reduction.
- Low power draw. XREAL says it uses less than 3W when plugged straight into a device.
A few things to know first:
- Text can look softer at 240Hz. XREAL says the extra processing for 240Hz can blur text slightly. For menus and reading, a lower rate looks sharper.
- Armoury Crate won't control it. XREAL says to use ASUS DisplayWidget Center for brightness, refresh rate and multi-screen settings.
- No focus dials. The box includes a plain insert your optician can fit with your prescription. XREAL also sells made-to-order prescription inserts.
- Pick the right size. The IPD 63 size fits 57 to 66 mm. The IPD 69 size fits 66 to 75 mm. Your IPD is often printed on your eye prescription.
- The cable is fixed at 1.2 meters. XREAL says that keeps the connection stable at high refresh rates.
Is 240Hz worth it?
Only if your games run fast. You see the benefit when a game runs above 120 frames per second. On a handheld, that usually means lighter or older games, or turning settings way down. If you mostly play big new releases, a 120Hz pair will look just as smooth.
What's in the X20 bundle?
ASUS sells the ROG Xbox Ally X20 as a limited bundle with ROG XREAL R1 Edition 20 glasses. Here's the handheld:
- A 7.4-inch OLED screen at 1080p and 120Hz. ASUS rates it at 1,400 nits peak, with DisplayHDR 1000.
- AMD's Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme chip and an 80Wh battery.
- USB4 with DisplayPort 2.1, plus a second USB-C port with DisplayPort.
- A weight of 756 g.
The US bundle also comes with a Pelican Protector Case and a dbrand Killswitch. The glasses come in a transparent black and gold finish. We couldn't find any spec changes from the regular R1.
When we checked on November 2, 2026, ASUS listed the bundle at $2,499.99.
Should you get it? If you want a new handheld and the R1 anyway, the bundle keeps things simple. Already own an Ally X or Xbox Ally X? The regular R1 is confirmed for those too.
Other good picks
XREAL 1S. The value pick with tracking. Its 3DoF runs on the glasses like the R1's, but it tops out at 120Hz. XREAL confirms it for all five Ally models.
VITURE Beast. The biggest screen of the bunch, with a 58° view and built-in 3DoF. VITURE names every Ally except the X20.
RayNeo Air 4 Pro. The budget pick for the original Ally and the Ally X. It has no head tracking, but it's bright, at up to 1,200 nits.
Set it up
- Plug the glasses into a USB-C port on your Ally.
- Windows treats them as a second display. In Settings, go to System, then Display. Set it to show only on the glasses to play on them alone. Got a keyboard plugged in? Windows + P does the same thing.
- Check the refresh rate under Advanced display in the same menu. On the R1, DisplayWidget Center can do this too.
Want to charge while you play? The original Ally has only one USB-C port, so you'll need a hub with power passthrough. Every later model has two USB-C ports with DisplayPort. Run the glasses from one and charge from the other.
Tips for better sessions
- Turn the brightness down a notch. XREAL says lower brightness helps with motion blur when you move your head.
- Recenter the screen. In Follow mode, open the R1's menu to bring the screen back in front of you.
- Add consoles later. The R1's ROG Control Dock has a DisplayPort 1.4 input and two HDMI 2.0 inputs. That lets the same glasses work with a PS5, an Xbox or a gaming PC.
- Anchored screen sliding? On the XREAL 1S, our screen drift fix walks you through it.
- Want an ultrawide screen? Here's how to set one up on Windows, including the R1's Aspect Control.
