Best AR glasses for Steam Deck (and why 16:10 matters)

The Steam Deck's screen is 16:10. Most AR glasses are 16:9. Here's why that matters, plus the glasses we'd pick for Deck gaming.

The Steam Deck is one of the easiest devices to pair with AR glasses. Its USB-C port sends video, so most glasses just plug in and work. The part most buyers miss is the shape of the screen.

Every row above is confirmed by the company that makes the glasses. The list for the original LCD Deck is the same.

Why 16:10 matters on a Deck

The Deck's own screen is 1280×800. That's a 16:10 shape, a little taller than a TV. Most AR glasses use 1920×1080 screens, which are 16:9, the same shape as a TV.

A few glasses use 1920×1200 instead. That's 16:10, the same shape as the Deck. A game made for the Deck's screen scales up by exactly one and a half times and fills your whole view. No black bars, no stretching.

On 16:9 glasses, most games adjust just fine. Some only run at 16:10, though, and those show black bars at the edges. You can tweak this per game. Open the game's Properties, then Game Resolution. "Native" renders the game at your glasses' full resolution instead of the Deck's default.

These glasses have 1920×1200 screens, and every one is confirmed for Steam Deck:

  • VITURE Beast
  • VITURE Luma, Luma Pro and Luma Ultra
  • XREAL 1S
  • XREAL Aura

Our pick: XREAL 1S

The 1S gives you the Deck's screen shape at a mid-range price. It runs at up to 120Hz. Its 3DoF tracking runs on the glasses, so you can pin the screen in place and lean back on the couch. The lenses also clear up when you look away, which helps when someone hands you a drink. XREAL lists both Steam Deck models for a direct USB-C hookup.

Skip it if you want the biggest possible screen. That's the next pick.

Biggest screen: VITURE Beast

The Beast is 16:10 too, with a wider 58° view and up to 1,250 nits of brightness. Its 3DoF is built into the glasses as well.

Skip it if you're watching your budget. It's a flagship and priced like one. Nearsighted? The Beast skips focus dials, so check how prescriptions work on the Beast before you buy.

Nearsighted pick: VITURE Luma

The Luma is also 16:10, and its focus dials go all the way to -6.00. That's further than the pricier Luma Pro and Luma Ultra, which stop at -4.00. If you're mildly nearsighted with no astigmatism, you can skip prescription inserts entirely. The dials don't correct astigmatism, so you'd still need inserts for that.

Budget pick: RayNeo Air 4 Pro

This one is 16:9, so you'll hit the trade-off above in some games. In return, you get a bright 1,200-nit screen for less money. There's no head tracking, but you're holding the Deck anyway, so a fixed screen works fine. Android Authority found the Deck worked with no extra hardware.

What to skip

Puck-powered glasses like the XREAL Aura do work with the Deck. But the Deck is already doing the computing. Unless you also want Android XR apps, the puck is extra weight and one more battery to charge.

Ultralight VR goggles need a gaming PC, so they're out too.

Before you play

  • Your Deck powers the glasses. Expect shorter sessions than on the Deck's own screen.
  • One port, one problem. The Deck has a single USB-C port. Plug in your glasses and you can't charge. A pass-through charging adapter or a battery dock fixes that. VITURE lists the Steam Deck as compatible with its Pro Mobile Dock, which has a built-in battery. Cheaper adapters are hit and miss, so check your glasses maker's list first.
  • Black screen? Make sure you're using the cable that came with your glasses. Our XREAL black screen fix covers the rest.
  • Own a Switch 2 too? It's trickier. Here's how to get Switch 2 onto your glasses.
  • Weighing a ROG Ally instead? Every Ally sends video over USB-C too. Here's our ROG Ally guide.
