Two pairs of glasses. Two pocket computers. Both cost well over $1,000. The XREAL Aura ships this month, and Meta's VR Glasses go on sale in spring 2027. So if you want one, the real question is timing: buy the Aura now, or wait for Meta?

They're less alike than they look. The Aura is see-through. You look through the lenses at the real room, and the picture floats on top. Meta's pair is VR. Its screens block your view, and cameras show you the room instead.

Note

We haven't tested either pair. The Aura is only starting to ship, and Meta's glasses aren't out yet. This comparison uses each maker's specs and docs, plus hands-on reports from Meta's demos at Connect, all checked November 4, 2026.

The short version

Get the Aura now if you want a big screen for movies, a laptop or a Steam Deck this year, and you'd rather see the room with your own eyes.

Wait for Meta if you want sharper screens, a wider view, real VR games and 3D movies, and a camera view of the room doesn't bother you. You'll pay more, and you'll wait until spring with no exact date.

How they're built

The two pucks have more in common than you'd guess. Both run Qualcomm's Snapdragon Reality Elite chip. Both carry the battery, so the glasses stay light.

XREAL Aura. The 95 g glasses connect to a 265 g puck by cable. The base model has 12GB of memory and 256GB of storage. You see the room through prism lenses, and five levels of tint dim it when you want more focus.

Meta VR Glasses. The glasses weigh about 100 g and connect to a puck of about 300 g by an optical cable. You get 12GB of memory, 128GB of storage and a microSD slot. The screens are opaque. Color cameras show you the room, and the sides of the frame stay open, so you still catch the real world in your side vision.

Where Meta's glasses win

  • A sharper picture. Each eye gets 2412×2288 pixels, at 37 pixels per degree. XREAL lists 1920×1200 and 32 for the Aura. Pixels per degree is the number that decides how crisp small text looks.
  • A wider view. Meta lists 70° side to side and 66° top to bottom. Road to VR works that out to about 88° corner to corner. XREAL quotes 70° for the Aura and doesn't say how it's measured, but glasses makers usually measure corner to corner.
  • Real VR. The glasses run the same software and store as a Quest. Meta promises more than 75 games at launch that you play with just your hands. Add Touch Plus controllers for the rest. Here's which Quest games will work.
  • A movie machine. Meta supports Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and calls the glasses the first IMAX Enhanced VR device. Disney+, Peacock, HBO Max and Paramount+ are bringing 3D catalogs.
  • Your eyes do the aiming. Look at a button and pinch to press it. Road to VR found you can rest your hands in your lap while you do it.
  • More fit range. The lenses slide from 56 to 70 mm, one eye at a time. The Aura comes in two fixed sizes, and the smaller one starts at 60 mm.
  • A charger in the box. Meta includes a 45W USB-C charger. The Aura ships without one.

Where the Aura wins

  • You can buy it now. XREAL's first batch ships in mid-November, with 30-day returns from its store.
  • A real view of the room. No cameras sit between you and your coffee cup.
  • It costs less. $1,099 through December 31, then $1,279. Meta's pair is $1,299.99 before controllers or storage.
  • Android apps. The puck runs Android XR, Google Play apps and Gemini.
  • No puck needed for movies. The glasses also plug straight into a laptop or Steam Deck like regular tethered glasses. Here's how both setups work.
  • Prescription lenses you can order today. XREAL's Aura lenses cover -10.00 to +4.00 with astigmatism, from $49.90. Meta hasn't posted a range or price yet. Compare Aura lenses with what Meta has said.

The catches

Meta VR Glasses:

  • It's months away. Spring 2027, no exact date, and no preorders yet.
  • No controllers in the box. Meta sells Touch Plus controllers separately. Our accessories guide adds up the extras.
  • A narrower view than a Quest. 70° side to side, against a Quest 3's 110°. In Engadget's laptop demo, three windows didn't fit in view at once. It took a turn of the head to see each one.
  • The puck runs warm. Engadget noticed the heat without even touching it, and doubted a pocket would be comfortable.
  • Sound leaks. Road to VR found the open speakers spill sound and lack bass. Bring headphones for the plane.
  • Up to 3 hours. That's Meta's figure for media playback.

XREAL Aura:

  • You need a Google account to set it up.
  • No charger in the box, and the included cable can't carry video into the puck. Here's what to buy.
  • The puck's fan runs whenever it's on.
  • XREAL designed it for sitting down, indoors.
  • The $1,099 price is a launch offer that ends December 31.

Weight is the glasses alone. Add about 300 g for Meta's puck and 265 g for XREAL's. And remember the field of view caveat above: Meta's number is side to side.

The timing problem

The Aura's $1,099 price ends December 31. Meta's glasses won't be on sale until spring, and preorders haven't opened. So you can't line the two up and pick. You have to decide on the Aura first.

If you're torn, XREAL's 30-day return window is your friend. Buy the Aura, use it every day for a few weeks and send it back if it's not for you. Just skip the custom prescription lenses until you're sure. XREAL won't take those back.

With a Steam Deck

The Aura is the safe pick here. Plug the Deck into the puck with a USB-C cable that carries video, or plug the glasses straight into the Deck. The 1920×1200 screens match the Deck's 16:10 shape.

Meta's puck takes video in over USB-C too, and Meta says it works as a console display. But Meta hasn't said what resolution or refresh rate it accepts, and nobody outside Meta has tested it. Here's what we know about plugging in.

With a laptop

Both work with MacBooks and Windows laptops.

The Aura shows your laptop in a window inside Android XR, over a USB-C video cable. Or plug the glasses straight in as a plain monitor.

Meta's glasses can stream a Mac or Windows PC wirelessly, as several screens, or take it over USB-C. Engadget tried a remote desktop from a Windows laptop: three windows you could rearrange or merge into one ultrawide layout. Meta says a table or desk can also act as a keyboard and touchpad, though Engadget found typing on it less accurate.

The bottom line

If you want a big screen this year, get the Aura. It does movies, laptops and handhelds today, and it's about $200 cheaper while the launch price lasts.

If you want VR games, sharper movies and a lighter take on a Quest, wait for Meta. Spring isn't far off. Our Meta VR Glasses tracker will flag the moment preorders open.

Not sold on either at this price? Tethered glasses do the big-screen job for a few hundred dollars. Start with our best AR glasses for flights or best AR glasses for Steam Deck.
